Memorial Day Tribute

Each memorial day we honor a veteran of each war at Elmwood Cemetery.

Biographical and Historical information is presented at the each gravesite.

The Glenn Hill Post of the American Legion color guard offers the salute.

Refreshments are served at the museum after the Tribute.

 

 

Veterans Day

The Cedar Springs Museum hosts an open house each veterans day.  Visitors are encouraged to view the military display and add their own military history to our genealogy  department.

 

 

Historical Society

The Historical Society meets at 3:30 every third Wednesday of each month, at the museum.

Published in 1995 by local author, Betty Heiss .  This wonderful book gives a brief history of Solon Twp., Kent County, Michigan.  It includes lists from the tax rolls from 1867 to 1874, non resident tax payers, township officers, names in local cemeteries, schools, some Civil War Veterans and more!

Published in 1993...This book contains a history of the Michigan Indian written by John Coady and 30 legends given to him by a Native American family in 1940. Mr. Coady grew up on a farm near a Native American settlement.  His love for their history grew from the relationship he shared with these neighbors. Mr. Coady was a respected speaker on Native American history for many years.

Obituary Indices Cedar Springs Kent Co MI

 

 

The majority of the death notices were extracted from early area newspapers dating from the late 1800’s through the 1900’s. An accumulation of over 6700 entries from six volumes were accessed for this index. Each volume has been indexed separately by name and page number and complied in this book.

Beautiful Gold Ornament

This ornament features the “Union School” a magnificent building that was built in 1876 on the corner of Main and Muskegon St. The school was torn down in 1925 and replaced with the current school known as Hilltop.

Two styles of ornaments are available, a detailed 3-D etched ornament and the same ornament with a sun catcher back in light blue stained glass. 

This beautiful ornament is the first in a series.  The museum planes to feature other historic buildings in future ornaments.
